School fundamentals

Hazlegrove Preparatory School is an independent prep day and boarding school for boys and girls (50%/50%) between the ages of 2 and 13 years. Boarding from Year 3 for the 20% of pupils who board. 85% are full boarders and 15% are weekly or flexi boarders. It is a Church of England school, open to all faiths and none. The school has a non-selective admissions policy. It is the prep school to King’s Bruton, an all-through school to age 18. Hazlegrove Preparatory School fees range from £4,011 (Rec) to £8,457 per term (2025/26). Full boarding fees range from £10,415 to £13,288 per term. Fees include VAT but exclude lunches.

Average class size

Hazlegrove Preparatory School has one class per year to Year 1, two or sometimes three to Year 5, four in Year 6, and an average class size of 15 pupils.

Leavers' destinations

At the end of Year 8, up to 50% of Hazlegrove Prep pupils move up to King’s Bruton, part of the same foundation. King’s Taunton, Sherborne, and Bryanston are also popular destinations. 50%-70% of pupils win awards and scholarships.

The Hazlegrove Preparatory School curriculum

School curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and the ISEB Common Entrance curriculum. It is a traditional subject-based curriculum and also includes study skills, PSHE, French, Mandarin, Latin, Greek. The school is one of the 50 prep schools with the most extensive academic and hobby extra-curricular programmes in the UK.

There are regular educational trips for all year groups, visiting speakers a school sleepover in Year 4 and residential trips from Year 5. Outdoor learning throughout the school, with Forest School for pre-prep, and curricular outdoor adventure and bushcraft to Year 8.

Specialist teaching

Specialist teachers for music, drama, languages, and sport throughout, for science, computing, and art from Year 3, for all subjects bar English and the humanities from Year 5, and for all subjects from Year 6.

Sport at Hazlegrove Preparatory School

Sport is a major feature of the curriculum. By Year 4 there are two PE lessons and seven games lessons per week, with matches on Wednesdays and Saturdays. School is one of the 50 prep schools with the most extensive sports offers in the UK. Competitive teams in major sports from Year 3. In recent years the school has enjoyed national success in athletics, cricket, cross country, hockey, judo, karate, squash.

The Arts at Hazlegrove Preparatory School

Art, music and drama are taught as discrete curricular subjects to all pupils. All pupils learn an instrument in class and three-quarters take extra-curricular instrument lessons from Year 3. Five choirs, orchestra and 10 instrument ensembles. Each pupil may participate in up to 10 different extra-curricular creative and performing arts clubs.
