School fundamentals

Taunton Preparatory School is an independent prep day and boarding school for boys and girls (50%/50%) between the ages of 3 months and 13 years. Boarding from Year 3 for the 10% of pupils who board. 80% are full boarders and 20% are weekly or flexi boarders. It is a United Reformed Church school, open to all faiths and none. The school has an academically selective admissions policy from Year 3. It is the prep school to Taunton School, an all-through school to age 18. Taunton Preparatory School fees range from £3,550 (Rec) to £7,430 per term (2025/26). Full boarding fees range from £9,990 to £12,640 per term. Fees include VAT but exclude lunches.

Average class size

Taunton Preparatory School has two classes per year to Year 4, three from Year 5, four from Year 7, and an average class size of 18 pupils.

Leavers' destinations

Most Taunton Prep pupils move up to Taunton School at the end of Year 8. Pupils are not required to sit Common Entrance 13+ exams to progress to the senior school.

The Taunton Preparatory School curriculum

School curriculum is based on the National Curriculum with some additions and variations. It also includes PSHE, French, Spanish, German, Latin. ‘Creative Curriculum’ in Years 3 to 5 explores cross-curricular themes across the humanities, computing, and English. Saturday morning enrichment for Years 3 to 6 extends the creative arts, performing arts and cookery curricula. The school offers each pupil between 5 and 10 different extra-curricular academic activities or hobby clubs.

There are regular educational trips for all year groups, visiting speakers and residential trips from Year 7.

Specialist teachers for sport and music throughout, for languages from Year 3, and for most subjects from Year 5.

Sport at Taunton Preparatory School

School offers over 20 different sports through the year, through both the curriculum and an extensive extra-curriculum. Competitive teams in major sports from Year 3. In recent years the school has enjoyed national success in rugby 7s, shooting, swimming.

The Arts at Taunton Preparatory School

Art, music and drama are taught as discrete curricular subjects to all pupils. All pupils learn an instrument in class and three-quarters take extra-curricular instrument lessons from Year 3. Three choirs, orchestra and 7 instrument ensembles. The school is one of the top 50 UK prep schools for the breadth of its creative and performing arts extra-curriculum.
